3.e in Toronto!

On Wednesday October fourth we arrived home in Copenhagen after an amazing and eventful trip to Toronto. Though we didn’t have homestay, we had lot of opportunity to experience the Canadian multiculturalism up close.

Our first glimpse of the city was a positive one. The expectation of Canadians being polite, friendly and welcoming proved to be true. We went through the financial district, which has a kind of New York-feeling with tall skyscrapers in glass. Even though Toronto has loads of similarities with The Big Apple, it differentiates significantly with its ethnic districts such as Greek Town or Little Italy, where diffrent cultures from all over the world dominate these small neighbourhoods. Through these small districts Canada’s status as a multicultural society is stressed.

The experience, which made the biggest impression on all of us was without a doubt the trip to the sanctuary Rama, where we spent the day with the original people. The day offered home cooked delicious food, such as elk soup, rituals, sacrificing of tobacco and something called a ’silent walk’, where you walk in the beautiful nature in complete silence for two hours. We got a look into the original people’s way of life, which stands in contrast to the surrounding society. They see themselves as shepherds, whose task it is to take care of and cherish nature.

Besides multiculturalism and diversity being very Canadian, we also learned that hockey is the foundation for a shared passion and interest the across the population. We were so lucky to see a game between two universities, luckily Toronto won the game.
