3.x in Iceland

We arrived in the wild and fierce landscape half an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, which is the starting point for our journey. Already on the trip from the airport it is clear that the biggest difference between Denmark and Iceland is the nature. Everywhere you can see lava stones collected through thousands of years.

We spend the first night with our Icelandic host families. The Icelanders are very hospitable and you get invited into their homes as if your were an old family member. Even though it is a bit awkward in the beginning, you quickly get to know each other as the Danish and Icelandic culture is pretty similar. The Icelanders are very good at english and some can even entertain with a bit of danish, even though it is clear that speaking danish is a closed chapter in Icelandic history.

On the third day we are going to explore the Icelandic kitchen. We have heard rumours and everybody is very excited when we are greeted and move towards the small buffet of Icelandic food that our hosts have put together for us. On the menu were such items as fermented shark meat, dried cod, flatbread and rice pudding. The shark meat has a strong taste of ocean water. It has a very sharp taste and not to everybody’s taste. But no shame in saying no thanks to the shark meat, because most Icelanders our age don’t like it.

The nature of Iceland is amazing. We visited The Gullfoss waterfall. Giant masses of meltwater is collected and forms a giant waterfall in many levels. It is a beautiful sight and many new profile pictures were taken. The northern lights is also a fantastic sight and we were so lucky to experience it many nights in a row.

We were also so lucky to experience walking through a lava tunnel formed by liquid lava thousands of years ago. Iceland is a stunning place especially because of its unique nature, but also the kindness the whole class has been met with. So long!
